Garage Door Cable Repair Across Connecticut
The lift cables on a garage door look small, but they’re what actually carry the door’s weight between the drums and the bottom brackets. When a cable frays, snaps, or jumps off the drum, the door drops on one side, the spring system goes out of balance, and the opener can’t do its job.

What a cable failure actually looks like
There are three patterns we see almost every week. First: the door is crooked when you raise it — one side comes up faster than the other because a cable has slipped off the drum. Second: there’s a frayed steel cable visible at one of the bottom brackets — that’s a near-failure. Third: the door is stuck partway and won’t move with the opener; usually one cable has snapped and the safety reverse kicked in.
- Door tilts to one side when lifting or lowering.
- Visible fraying, kinks, or rust at the bottom-bracket end of a cable.
- Cable slack on one side, taut on the other.
- Door drops faster than it should and lands hard.
- Loud popping or grinding from the drum area.
Why cables and springs are a system
Cables don’t lift the door on their own — they transfer the springs’ stored energy to the door. That means a cable problem and a spring problem look very similar from the homeowner’s side, and they cause each other: a failing spring will over-stress a cable; a failed cable will dump load back into the spring system. We always inspect both together.
What we do on a cable service call
Cables get replaced in pairs, not one at a time — they wear at the same rate, and matched pairs keep the door balanced. We disconnect the opener, relieve spring tension safely, swap both cables, re-seat them on the drums to manufacturer spec, re-tension the springs to match the door’s weight, and run a balance test before we touch the opener again.
Why this isn’t a homeowner DIY job
Cable repair sits inside the spring system, which is under huge stored tension. Loosening the wrong fastener — particularly the cable drum set screws — while the springs are still wound can send the drum spinning at high speed. We’re not trying to scare anyone away; we’re telling you why this one specific repair is the one we’d most discourage you from trying.
